Ichiyo

Prunus
Prunus Ichiyo blossom
Ichiyo has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Prunus Ichiyo is a popular medium-sized Japanese blossom tree. The double flowers are a light shell pink colour with pale green centres, borne in clusters on long stalks. The flowers are long-lasting, tending to fade to white over time. They are a real spectacle when the tree is in full bloom.

In autumn the leaves turn orange-red.

The young branches grow with an upright habit initially, but over time the canopy will spread more widely - forming a natural vase shaped open centre tree.

Prunus Ichiyo originates from Japan, and is one of the varieties introduced to western gardeners by the English enthusiast Captain Collingwood Ingram. It is sometimes also known as Prunus 'Pink Champagne', which is a nice description for the blossom colour..
