Shosar

Prunus campanulata x incisa x sargentii
Prunus Shosar blossom
Shosar has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Shosar is an unusual hybrid flowering cherry, quite obviously related to the classic vigorous pink-blossomed Sargent's Cherry, yet smaller and noticiably more upright.

The large pink single flowers with dark centres are the main attraction, but unusually for a flowering cherry Shosar also has attractive autumn leaf colours.

History

Prunus Shosar was raised by the famous British flowering cherry enthusiast Captain Collingwood Ingram. It is a cross between Prunus incisa (the Fuji cherry) and Prunus campanulata (the Formosan cherry) further crossed with Prunus sargentii. Some authorities classify crosses of Prunus incisa and Prunus campanulata in the hybrid species Prunus x incam. The pink blossom and strong autumn colours are very characteristic of Prunus sargentii, but the compact size and early flowering are typical of Prunus incisa.
