History

Thorn is an old pear variety from Gloucestershire, known from the 17th century. Originally used for eating and cooking it is now primarily considered used for perry production.

Perry is a traditional drink made from fermented pear juice, sometimes known as pear cider. Perry pears are not really suitable for eating fresh, but in other respects are just like regular pear trees and will cross-pollinate with them.
