How to choose Apple trees

Apples are perhaps the most versatile of all temperate fruits, and one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. They are easy to grow and well adapted to the UK climate. Without much difficulty (or space) one can grow a number of different apple trees which will keep a family supplied with fresh apples from mid-summer to late autumn, and with a good spread of flavours and uses.

Some apple varieties are self-fertile but most are not. However this is not an issue in most areas, as there are bound to be be other apple trees around which will help with pollination.
